About the Security Guard License or Guard Card

Becoming a security guard is the beginning of a rewarding and exciting career in a field where you can truly make a difference. Security personnel are needed in many more places than you may imagine, think of hospitals, schools, retail stores, military installations, banks, factories and many other businesses. They’re all hiring security guards to protect their customers, products and properties against theft and other crimes. Did you know some insurance companies even offer discounts to businesses who protect their goods and property by hiring security guards? In the end, the insurance discount can cover up for the costs of hiring security personnel, so it’s a highly demanded profession. But before you start going out on a job hunt, you should know that every security officer in the United States is required to carry a security guard license with them while they’re on the job…

This license, also called a guard card in some places, is an authorization issued by the state where you live that allows you to work as a security officer. Because the licensing of security officers is regulated and controlled on a state-by-state level rather than a nation wide level, each state has its own regulations and requirements for license applicants. Still, there are some general requirements that we can outline for you.

For instance, a condition that remains unchanged regardless of what state you live in, is the requirement for all license applicants to be 18 years of age. This is for an unarmed guard license application, those who want to employ a function as an armed guard need to apply for an armed license for which the minimum age is set at 21 years. Another requirement is that you are legally able to work in the United States, this means that you have to be a US citizen or resident alien with a work permit. Some states will only issue licenses to applicants who have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a driver’s license.

Another important condition that most states have in common for the licensing of security personnel is that they should have a clean criminal record. Most states require you to provide proof of this by submitting your fingerprints, either by sending in the traditional ink fingerprint cards or by having them enrolled electronically at a facility that offers Live Scan fingerprint services.

Last but not least comes a mandatory training course that will prepare you for the job as a security agent. In some states this training course needs to be completed in 8 hours, other states require you to follow an 8-hour pre-assignment training course and another in-service training course once you are employed. Either way, the training course is nothing to be worried about. It will teach you the most basic and vital aspects of working in the security industry such as how to write proper reports, patrol techniques and even some verbal skill development.

Remember that each state may have additional requirements and requests. Some states are known to ask for a doctor’s report that you are mentally and emotionally stable, or that you are independent from alcohol or drugs. Another example can be found in Illinois, where you first need to obtain a Permanent Employee Registration Card or Illinois PERC Card in short before you can apply for a license. This PERC card is a required document for many professions, including massage therapists, school bus drivers and private detectives.
